U Haul Days

October 6, 2014 Kimberly Willis Holt

Thirty-two years ago my dad helped me move from Louisiana to Texas. My parents had moved to the Dallas area a few years before. The day my dad hitched the U Haul trailer behind his Buick, he told me, "Life never seemed right with you so far away."

Two weeks ago, my dad joined me on a similar journey. This time we were moving my 27 year- old daughter here for a new job. My husband and I'd waited two years for this moment. From Amarillo, my daughter led the way to her new life. Heading down Highway 287, my focus switched back and forth. Sometimes watching Shannon's white Camry with the peace symbol on its bumper. Other times glancing in the rearview mirror at the U Haul truck my dad drove. Joy filled every cell in my body. Life seemed just right.
